Just wanted to announce that I have just completed replacing the evaporator in my E300D.... Let me tell you, this is a proud moment in my life!! It was nip and tuck there for a while but after the smoke cleared, with all the stuff that I broke taking it apart, I wound up spending a grand total of .......US$468.00.
The dealer wanted 15 hours labor (probably a very good estimate), $790 for the evap and the broken parts were unobtainable... so they wanted to put the whole box in new..@>$3000.00. So... that job could have cost in the neighborhood of $5000. Not sure how much the car is worth, but its paid for so I am gonna stick with it a while longer. No other problems. Still drives real good and is quite and a smooth ride. Just wanted to thank Malcomb for his input and patience... Thanks again, R.Barrett:-D

You should feel justly proud to complete this job as i investigated doing it on my C43 AMG and the amount of dissassembly involved i found it daunting and was quite pleased that my diagnosis of the system led me elsewhere.
Well done.

That sliding cubby box takes the place of the glove box... they omitted the glove box in favor of an airbag......

You are one hell of a brave man tackling that job. Just think you got it all back together and you find a small plastic gizmo that you just know is the most important bit of the whole job...bugger:cool:;)

It happened... the tach did not work and all the A/C and heater controls were screwy... Both items were fixed on a do-over... I had missed the plug on the tach and I knew about it at the time but forgot to plug in the connector on the vacuum control switch. After the initial disassembly, the do-over was quite easy. (The box that the heater core and evap live in can be assembled and all the doors and vacuum motors can be tested prior to installation so any problems there can be addressed). The instrument panel comes out easily with the hooks I made. No problem. The vacuum control switch took a little more time. The thing that had me worried was all the wires for the instrument panel and the the radio... They both proved to be a snap (except for the unplugged tachometer). It would be easy to forget something but very hard to hook it up wrong... not saying it couldn't be done. I took pictures with the digital camera all along the way, at each step, from a couple different angles. That proved invaluble.... The a/c is working perfectly and no rattles... those things are built pretty darn solid! The only thing that was not up to snuff (IMHO)was the plastic "box" in which the heater core and evap reside. Very flimsy ...and brittle, to boot! Extra caution when messing with that box!

I have to agree it is some job doing some things, try and turn it around in the mind and make it positive, so that you want to do it, in this case loads of dismantling, and more, but in the process you can fix all rattles, flaps etc as you go.

Camera's are so good these days for all of the complicated bits, and try and make sure that you can do it all in one go, as when things get left the mind soon forgets.

A grand job rbarrett :D:D

Hi,
The problem with plastic it goes brittle if exposed to heat/sunlight/age etc. I,m having problems with the my C43, every bit of plastic under the bonnet is so brittle, just got to touch it and it snaps, as Olly found out when he recharged my A/C, lucky it is all reasonably easy to get hold of and not to expensive from the main dealers.

Coach builder use these super glues on all of these things Andy, the ones where you apply the glue and the curing agent is in aerosol form. they even fix bumpers and wings on with it
