I must say the the design does not seem very good or is it the poor quality of the steel back plate, its hard to remember the days of drum rears.

The other thing is I cannot recall this ever coming up before, but then again I do not answer many A class post.

Unlike thin disc brake brake shields Drum brake back plates should not bend- they have to be capable of transmitting the braking forces of the shoes by resisting the rotating forces generated by the drum. May have had the temper taken out of the steel by repeated overheating or make have been subjected to forces they weren't designed for - e.g. by a trolley jack

The metal is thinnish, I managed to 'reshape' it quite effectively so I'll keep an eye on it

No idea how the backplate got bent, but the car wasn't in the best of health when we bought it, as I discovered a few days later!
