Hi,

I have just purchased a 06 A Class 160 CDI and the engine management light and headlights are permanently on.

Any help please

Yes - take it back!

We need a lot more information in order to help out.

Did you purchase it knowing the engine light was on (or did you drive it away from the purchase with it on)? If so - why?

If not, and the problem has developed immediately after purchase, then depending on where you got it from, take it back. If it was a private sold-as-seen purchase, then you will struggle to get redress, so the best bet is to get it to a Mercedes indie (or dealership if you are really flush) to get the fault codes read and analysed/understood.

The headlamps may or may not be a problem, depending on what "permanently on" actually means. They can, I believe, be set to be always on when the ignition is on. However if they are on permanently, even with the keys not in the ignition/car locked, then there is a more serious problem - again which needs diagnosing by someone who knows what they are doing.

No disrespect but buying a car with the engine light on and accepting it is madness. Unless you got the car for a super cheap price.

Could be anything.

EML could be just about anything. The cost to put it out could be the same. ;)

Headlights. My R Class has the option to have the lights on Auto at the switch, but also via the menu on the screen it has the option to have the lights 'on continuously'. I was puzzled to start with as to why I couldn't turn them off.

The MIL is now an MOT failure, so the dealer has sold you a car that is not fit for the purpose.

Probably the MAF built into the ECU, expensive so dealer did not fix.

As Miffy above the car was not roadworthy if sold like that.

Thought the w169 a class has a separate MAS and ECU ?

The w168 has it combined and it a nuisance to fix , but MB went back to the old way for the w169.
