A Class engine management system

The "engine management" warning light has come on in my A-Class (year of reg=2000), and has been on for the last 6 weeks.

The Mercedes dealer tells me this is because the computer control system is defective and it will cost >£1000 to get a new one. (They say the engine management system is programmed for the specific car.)

I know nothing about cars!

But the car is running fine. Do I really need a new EMS, or can it be "reprogrammed", or can't they just look at the engine to see whether there's anything wrong with it?

Oh for the days before computer-controlled performance…

Thanks for any advice.
