A class getting grit blasted

Close inspection of the engine compartment hood of my A class shows that after only 6 months it is showing considerable pock marking from flying road grit. Some is understandable due to the very upright barn door effect it presents but at this rate it will need a respray by the time it reaches 18 months. Is there any known way of mitigating this ? perhaps something along the lines of the nose cosy you used to be able to get for the VW beetle

There are firms out there the apply a 3M plastic coating to protect against this,its a kind of cling film, and many expensive cars are covered in this

See adverts near the back of magazines like EVO or Top Gear for what Television is talking about. Not that cheap though and might be a little OTT.......
