Only when the main topic has been covered,,its an age thing that creeps up on you

Why do not the moderators on here keep it under control?

It will cause confusion to anyone searching for the topic using the search engine to have to trawl through all the nif naff and off topic trivia

Many find this forum one of the best because of the good natured humour that prevails.

A Class

While I have been trawling the site for an insite to the W169 A Class I have instead found the script of Fawlty Towers.
This has led me to enjoy the info and the humour.
I have still got my little 2001 A160 series W168,it has now covered 85,000miles, runs like the proverbial swiss (or should that be German) watch. For those who don't know it is used as a driving school car, so it has 6 different drivers each day, five days a week. In 85,000miles all I have had to replace is the brake pads, tyres and a LH front lower ball joint. I love the car to bits, find the comments by the "real" Mercedes Benz owners offensive, ill informed and snobbish.
The reason I have been trawling the site is that I am currently thinking of upgrading to a W169 A170, have driven the Golf (very impressed, but I personally don't think it is in the same class overall) BMW forget it, being in the car all day, my back couldn't stand it, from there there isn't much left to compare. The real deal will be the change over price, there will have to be a BIG incentive to get me out of the trusty old A160.
Having said my piece I will now retire and put my gum boots on to receive all the mud forthcoming.

Exactly as it should be, and delightful to hear from a satisfied owner.

There is often a play on the couplet, "You pay for what you get, but did you get what you paid for".

In my view MB are not cheap, but you do get what you paid for - just look at the glass-work and paintwork when cleaning the car - in a different league to many mass produced cars.

There are other cars with similar accommodation - Citroen make one for example - so there is no shortage of direct competition and at aggressively competitive prices too. Yet there are lots of As about. They must be doing something right!

I had 2 Peugeot 205 diesels - one I bought new in 1985 (one of the first with 5 gears and rear seat belts), which worked flawlessly for 5 years and still achieved a good price.

The second was one I bought "site unseen" for my son. It was 4 years old with 40,000 and proved to be a real ash try when we picked it up.

He kept it in the style to which it was accustomed and put a further 80,000 on it. I don't think it was serviced more than once in that time. It kept on trucking. We sold it to someone local and saw it around for a long while after that. I suppose, like everything else in life - you can be lucky, or not.

Glad to see another fan of the A class. I've had two and been most impressed. My brother has the A160cdi which has been faultless and my daughter has the A180cdi Avantgarde (also without any problems).

And here’s what I recently said about A class seats in the 169 series –but on another thread: -
http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?p=379848#post379848

Well many won't believe what I say. But those with a tape measure will find that the A class seats (169 series from 2005) are as big as those in the ML or the R class. That is in squab width and depth, and the backrest. And they are very comfortable. We did over 2.000 miles in a fortnight in France and Spain and they were fine. The legroom front and rear is as much as my E class. (Both offer more than the R class). For £80 you get the comfort seat option which has the same seats as normal but with tilt adjustment for the squab and adjustable lumbar support. I had those.

I also paid the extra £115 to get the steering column adjustable for reach as well as rake, which I think makes a huge difference to comfort especially for taller drivers. My wife likes the steering wheel fully in; I like it fully out.

B class has the same seats BTW. But adjustable reach for the steering wheel as well as rake is standard.

IIRC the facelifted A's offer 'comfort seats' as standard on the dearer models (avantgarde etc).

BTW A class seats are high off the ground but that is due to the sandwhich floor raising the whole saloon interior higher off the ground. But the seats are no higher off the floor than my E class. The driving position is perfectly straight with wheel and pedals exactly straight in front of you as they should be. Technically a more correct driving position than an E class or a 5 series, neither of which are completely straight due to the massive gearbox tunnel. Excellent IMO.

.

How can different comments about a particular model be offensive?
Civil language has been used and a range of different opinions has been offered.

OK so you have a good experience and like the vehicle - I don't find that offensive.

I posted based on my experience of driving an A Class. I think most of the other posters have also driven the vehicle so we are not ill-informed.

As for being snobbish then that's just plain wrong. Mercedes made a complete horlicks of this vehicle when at launch (remeber the elk test) and I still think they do not compete in the Focus and Golf sector.

Best not rise to the provokative remarks from someone who comes from the "Land of Sledge". If he is bent on buying an A class best let him get on with it .

Let's be honest, there are plenty who feel that Mercedes should stick to its traditional model programme of large saloons, coupes and sports cars. And there are plenty who seem to like to take a poke at the widening of the model base.

The economics of car production is such that MB felt it had to diversify the range. Saloons are a much smaller share of the market than they used to be. At one time almnost all cars were saloons. Now it is 13% or so.

So MB went into smaller cars, hatchbacks,, 4x4's, the Smart and the R class. Teething troubles there were and some mistakes were made -as so often happens. The Smart has lost a fortune but has become an accepted part of the scene and just might make a profit one day. the R class has flopped. But the ML is established and the GL and GLK will become so in their turn. The A class has been most successful and sold well over a million. In terms of interior space and class-leading safety it has no equal. It has provided a secure basis for MB to remain in the hatchback market long term.
