How can different comments about a particular model be offensive?

As for being snobbish then that's just plain wrong. Mercedes made a complete horlicks of this vehicle when at launch (remeber the elk test).

It is very short sighted of you to compare the current (W169) model A Class with the original (W168) model.

Mercedes have used the engineering expertise that is used on the larger saloons to produce a small vehicle with all the content and excellence of the larger saloons..........It just seems that a few on these forums seem unable to accept the fact that the current A Class is a true Mercedes.........That is pure snobbery........My new A180 Avantgarde SE (1.7 petrol) with Blue EFFICIENCY and Stop/Start technology is an excellent example of quality Mercedes engineering.

I think that the A class has to be looked at against other similar cars, i see no way that it could match to an S class but that will probably be the reason that you need to shell out a further £50,000 for an S.

I have driven an A class that we had as a courtesy car and it seemed to be a reasonable little car for the sort of money that they go for.

It was a W169 I drove and didn't like. (auto box)

I wanted to like it as the plan was to buy one for my wife. Perhaps I had too high expectations. Have to agree that the seating is good.

She drove it (and before she knew my opinion) she didn't like it either.

Nothing snobbish at all.

if you ever meet me you will realise I am the furthest thing from a snob you can imagine.

Some people on here don't like the CLK, but I don't find that snobbish.

Bit of a late reply... but I've been very happy with the A150 Avantgarde we have. Wasn't so sure at first, thought the seating position was a bit odd and that a Golf/ Civic would be better but over the months its really grown on me.

The interior is fantastic with the rock solid quality you would expect from a MB and easily the best of any new car below £20k otr. The space inside is also very good, it makes a mockery of the Audi A3 and BMW 1-series. The 1.5 engine is surprisingly good, nippy arround town and cruises well on the motorway, very smooth and refined. Only complaint is the slightly hard ride, but it did seem to improve after its service recently and its certainly not bad enough to make me think the car needs to be sold after just a few months.

Havent had a single problem with it (yet), and this year the A-Class has done exceptionally well in all the JDPower, Which and AutoExpress reader suverys coming top of its class if it not very near the top for reliability and and owner satisfaction.

I still think they do not compete in the Focus and Golf sector.

It dosent fall directly into any sector. Some say its a supermini and should be compared to cars like the MINI, some say its a small family hatch like the Audi A3 and others say its an MPV to rival cars like the Golf Plus.

EDIT: Almost forgot, for the minority who still insist its not a 'proper MB', Fifth gear did a little comparision between an A and an SL, and the baby benz came out top - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXCkC8AGfzI
