A Class power loss

Hi, I am a new A class owner and I am experiencing A problem with my 2002 170cdi, it has suddenly lost power and wont go above 3000rpm, the idle seems very lumpy also, there are no warning lights coming on in the dash. Is this the mass air flow meter problem I have read about or are there any other suggestions as to what it could be, Thanks.

I think the test with these is to Unplug the maf and see if there's a change??? if there's a big change then the MAF is giving false readings and needs changed
