I have an A160 which has a weird rattle when started in cold temperatures (below about 8oC). Lasts about 5 mins until car is warm or away when clutch is depressed. Two dealers "cannot hear it" and when one recently gave me a courtesy car... that does it too! Do all A Classes do this - it is normal??? Any comments would be greatly welcomed.

I have a 1999 A170 and it doesn't rattle (even with over 70,000 miles on the clock). It sounds like a problem which disappears when the oil is warmed up and its viscosity thinned out. Possibly the shell bearings on the crankshaft ? Has it done a high mileage ?

Don't be silly....crank bearings..never, I work for MB and in my experience all A classes make this noise from gearbox (reason that you cant hear it as much on 170 is that it is masked by the diesel noise (similar sound) Auto's are ok for obvious reasons.
They do it when they are brand new, nothing to worry about.
