Hi all,

Got a CLK recently, - 6 Speed Tiptronic Box.

I need to clear a few questions up.

When I start the car in the morning first thing after the car has not been driven all night, To engage the gear I press the brake and put the box into reverse.

When I do this the screen says R --> 0, and then the screen states Apply Brakes!, Followed by Select Gear again.

I can do this a good four - six times and then the car will engage into Reverse / 1st / Auto

once its in gear it can sometimes go back to neutal telling me to reapply the brakes and try again, but after that its perfect all day when I come to the car at the end of the day, and I do not get the problem again.

Could this be as simple as a brake switch?

Or do I have a serious box fault?

This is only in the morning / cold.

Thanks all for your help with this.

Colechelle can advise better than me but I think it will only be a slight adjustment of the gear shift

wouldnt be so sure Malc, i have never seen or heard of the dash showing that message before! thinking about it though the brake light switch is what tells the selector that the brake pedal is pressed so i would guess a b/switch would be first call,

cheap as chips from mb mbzclk, part number you need is A0015452109, done so many i even no that (sad)!!!!

OK cool,

thanks for your reply.

Another question.

When i accelerate about 2.5-3k revs i get a noise from the engine (when warm like a tappet(ish) noise, it could be totally normal or it could be something im not to sure,

but i thought on the merc when i put my foot down it should just make a very "refined" noise under accereration.

when cold it does sound quite rough / lumpy for a few minutes and after about a min or 2 driving its ok.

prob is I know no one in my area with mercs or a decent specalist.

Im in London / Essex area.

I looked on Honest John and am also scared about the cam leak thingy that costs you an engine loom.

Thanks all.

Yes and sorry to say your model falls right into that age when the sensor fault was around, as for the noise it really could be anything from as you say, a tappet or worse, you really need to get some one who no,s the engine to have a listen!!!

hmm,

I know no-one i trust to take the car to,

I went to my usual old mechanic who said he will be fine looking after my merc, he drove it and said all is well and its a nice car.

No idea about much. It could be totally fine?

It does go like a rocket when i put the kickdown switch on.

Hmm, thats worrying...

I know no-one to take the car to, as you can see im very new to this all.

I took it to my mechanic who said it was all OK, but im not sure about the cam sensor, however I can see no signs of any oil leaks or similar, but I need to ask someone in the know.

I love the car its totally unmolested and in very nice condition. :)

very front of the engine on top is a cover, remove, there you have the cam sensor (round thing with a plug) disconnect the plug and see if theres any oil inside the plug hole!

Easy / Hard? I am not breaking anything on this car, would much rather leave it to a pro, but by the sounds of it ur asking for the top front cam cover to be removed, (before the oil and that) just pulls off? and then unplug the electrical connector on the round golden thing and look inside the connecction for oil?

Thanks again.

Will put pics up etc.

Also, when bringing it home I got about 30MPG on the computer, now im getting between 14-22 on the computer onboard, doing usually short trips but engine does warm up but its like mostly city driving not motorway driving.

are these denso iridium plugs any good? worth doing? or if it aint broke dont fix it?

Nice, but now i see why your having problems with the box! not many people know an awful lot about them boxes, merc didnt fit many of them but i know they suffer from pump faults, thats not the prob you got in the morning but again, un-known box really!!!

this morning it was very cold started it up and waited a min or 2 before trying to put it into gear and it went in 1st or second try and i was away. maybe it needs a few moments in the morning to get "ready" ?

Only other one I had was after work again cold I put it into Auto and left, when I came to the top of the road and come near a stop it went back to neutral (just once) and told me to apply brakes and select gear, after this faultless.

This is like the SMG in a bmw I am told, best to be driven in manual or auto mode and i've been told this "auto" mode is no way as good as a "proper benz auto" hmmmm
