A little light question.

Does anyone know what the function is of what appears to be a light about 3mm in diameter just below the fuel gauge centre pin hub on a 99 W210 E300TD??

cant find anything in the user manual about it and cant be the fuel light coz the warning sector of the fuel gauge lights up when low.

The W202 has a similar light as well, though it has never illuminated on mine and i doubt it is even wired up.

Thanks every one. A light sensor eh? didnt know the dash lighting was automatic, they think of everything dont they ?

The sensor window is generic to many instrument clusters, but not nessacarily working or in circuit.

Why would a light sensor light up. That doesn't make sense, excuse the pun. The dash board lights only come on with the main light switch. On mine this same light only comes on when the fuel gauge drops sufficiently for the fuel gauge warning light to come on. I think it is just another fuel gauge warning to make you really panic.

So we are no nearer the truth of the matter.

It is,nt always wired up, as it is generic in some instrument clusters, it will never light up as it is "allegedly" light sensor (though personally I don,t think this is correct).
The O/P wanted to know its function or wether it was supposed to light up.

In the 202, 208,215, 220 and 210 as of 06 1996 there is a photo cell that monitors the ambient light and adjust the instruments cluster display.

All on GF54.30-P-3016A

This stops you from having to twiddle with your knob whilst driving

Ah I misread the OP. However on my two S classes it does light up, and comes on at the same time as the fuel warning light in the lower quadrant of the gauge.

This is not the same one Mike,, this one is not in the gauge, it sits under it on from cars 96 on, and not on the S class
