Right, thanks! it makes sense..
I cleaned up the swirl flaps on my 2L BMW and they were terrible, it took me hours to clean them and the dirt is still all over the garage, so they do create problems. I knew nothing about them then and didn't know I could delete them but they're very easy to get to. One day I might have a go at the Merc too if I get the cooler seal fault. Mine too has done 100k miles.

Fuses are always in the emergency kit but I'll get another resistor. Don't know why I didn't buy more than one.. it was only 10cents. And my wife says I waste money!

I'll attached a photo of my BM swirl flaps and me... horrible job.

Taking the car up to Lake Constance in a couple of weeks. Should be great now!
It's all downhill with sunny skies now :D . Enjoy the trip . I'm prepping the CLK for a Dordogne visit in a couple of weeks !

Yes!! The sun is out and it's 30c here.
Never been to the Dordogne.. Going for the wine? Here is one of the best wine areas in the world - the Langhe with Barbaresco and Barolo, etc, and the scening it wonderful too. Be sure to visit, we can meet up!

Wighty you need to time your trips for when we're we're we're there - we are only 2 hours from the Dordogne. When you're there take a trip to Oradour. It's free to get into the village and an interesting experience.

That's funny LK , we were only talking about Oradour the other day , it's been on the list for a couple of years . Always mixed feelings going to places like this , bit like war graves , but it has to be done to remember those that don't have our freedoms today .
I'm sure we'll cross paths at some point , me being MB for life :D

UPDATE: The car had been running fine then suddenly it started to block the revs again to 2,000 rpm.. Switching off the IGN always reset it but as soon as I hit 120Km/h it went into safe mode again.. As it happens, a friend from Poland was visiting this weekend and he's an electronics genius and now specialises in remapping, reparing CPUs, etc. He found 2 issues..

1. the MAF sensors had been switched from left to right.. humm, not sure who did that...:( I never knew they should go back in the way they came out - L&R. So, we switched them and the car ran much better. But still at 120km/h it restricted the revs to 2,000 rpm..

2. A fault was coming up (don't recall the code right now) but too little turbo pressure. To cut the story short the o-ring was missing on the upper turbo inlet tube! I had cleaned all this but couldn't imagine leaving the ring off.. but all is possible. So, this morning I put on an ordinary black ring (should be green) and it goes like a rocket and no safe mode. After lunch (this is Italy nothing open on Monday morning..) I'll pop down to Mercedes and get the proper ring (OEM: 0149976445).

I also cleaned the MAF inlet grills and sensors with MAF cleaner.

I made pizza afterwards and we all agreed I'm a better pizza maker than I am a mechanic..

Off to Austria and Germany on Wednesday so very happy it's running like a dream. Bought a wind deflector from Sicily too through Ebay and that's great. It's an original Mercedes one so folds up. It makes a difference, not huge as it's not such an issue, but is more comfortable in the car when the roof is down.

My friend can also delete the EGR with no issues and remap the ECU a little ;-) That's for the future :)

AHA! I found another issue last night. Took it for a drive and it went into limp-home again. Panic!!

Fault codes: P0299 + 1101

Checked the intercooler pipes and found two splits, one rather large, on the left pipe. Hoping Mercedes have the part this morning otherwise it's going to be a repair/bodge just to get me on the move. I glued it last night with Araldite and will wrap it with gaffer tap and cable ties if we can't find the part today. This car will be new by the time all the faults are found..

Update: Mercedes didn't have the part in stock so I continued with plan B. The glue had set well so I then wrapped the pipe with gaffer tape and cable ties, washed up and drove to Germany. The car was no problem at all - we drove up to Maggiore, all through the B roads of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and into Germany then all the way back and the car didn't miss a beat. And it's still on there! In the coming days I'll order the part and replace the other side as well but for now it's working fine. So, always carry gaffer tape with you!

With repairs like that which are very effective but maybe not ascetically pleasing are probably more reliable than a new part unless it has been modified to avoid the same failure.
I fixed a part on the gear linkage of our Golf about three years ago and still have the new part in the tool box.

Did a motorcycle tour with a couple of pals to North West Italy including Barolo. Beautiful scenery, beautiful wine and food.

I think you're probably right! I found a guy on Youtube did a similar thing and he said it was still fine after 3 years! I was thinking to do the the same thing on both pipes. Thanks!!

It's fine now and the intercooler pipe was in a bad way so it must have been that, but good suggestion. Thanks!

Ah great!! We get a lot of bikes through. Yes, it's a beautiful place. Lonely Planet has declared it the No.1 place in the world to visit in 2019. We've lived here 17 years now and would never leave. Here's a typical view. Visit if you're never been!

Hi Richard what size rims have you got on your CLK, 19" ? I've got 17" on mine and they feel feel enough so what do bigger ones feel like, a bit too firm ?

Lovely looker btw.

Hi BigLad,
Thanks! They're 18" and what came with the car. They feel great. I did think the profile was too low because of all the bashing and crashing on bumps and potholes but now the suspension has been replaced they're fine. I can't really compare but they are fine. The car handles really well, but I had read before buying it that the handling on these cars wasn't so good so that could be down to wheel size.

Fronts: 225/35 x 18
Rears: 225/40 x 18
Dog hairs: white golden retriever..

Wheels are always the thing we want to change.. never happy.. I kind of like these but I did get a set of winter tyres with the car so I might buy another set of rims, would like an AMG style, and use those for summer and these on the car now for winter.

Please tell...! Oh the driving here is crazy. You have an incident every time you go out. Such fun! I have a German client here at the moment and she ploughed her Ford Focus hire car into the side of a tractor last week. And she'd opted to not have insurance...
