This time last year I got rid of my C270CDI for a B*W 330Cd. A great idea at the time but as diesel has shot up in price, it's getting nearly as expensive to run as a petrol (31 mpg on average!). Oh and the 18 inch wheels and sports suspension are rattling my fillings out

Anyway, looking at alternatives, I think I want to go for a CLK. I can't afford the 320CDI but the 270CDI looks like it'll give me better fuel consumption than the Bimmer albeit at the cost of some performance. I'm looking at a really nice one with a designo paint job and enough options to keep me happy. However, can someone tell me what the following are:

1 - Comfort seats
2 - Direct control suspension
3 - Direct control steering

many thanks.

Oh yes, do you get much by chipping a 270?

Comfort seats should be the massaging ones I imagine. Direct control steering... do they mean parameter steering? Thats the speed sensitive one (nice to have) and direct control suspension - was airmatic available on the clk?
As for chipping - you can get the 170bhp 270 to around 204 bhp comfortably (same as the old IL6 320cdi).

Comfort seats have air bags in them that you can inflate or deflate to get the most comfortable seating position. I found they were quite common on CLK's when I was looking at them.

Direct control steering is (I think) one of the "improvements" made along the way. I seem to remember it being 6% better than before (Germans are very precise). I drove new C class (both sport and elegance) and the steering and (standard)suspension of my CLK were IMO better.

No idea about direct control suspension but I like mine.

Thanks for the info.

I finally got to chat to the dealer today - seems the comfort seats fitted to this one heat and cool the driver / passenger too.

I am hoping that we can do a deal on this car - it sounds fantastic.

Well, I couldn't get the spec of CLC I wanted. :(

However, this was still available and I just couldn't resist the chromaflair paint. Not as powerful as my BMW, sure, but a lot more comfortable and a bit more exclusive

Well, if you dont do the deal take the 18" wheels off the B*W and replace them with 16 inch wheels without run flat tyres. I have a friend with a similar problem but with his back, worked a dream.

I should perhaps have added that the performance difference will probably annoy you. while the 270 is fine anyone used to the 320 would find it very different. The 330d engine is rather nice and the 320 is a better alternative.

I appreciate that the 270 is going to be down on power to the 330 but having a less powerful motor is a price I have to pay to get better fuel economy. Having had the 2.7 in a C class, I know what to expect.

Besides, finances won't stretch to a 320 but next time.....

I shall have to get used to wafting by. Perhaps it's 'cos I'm getting older but it doesn't worry me that much - I'll be comfy.
