Some of you will have seen my post in a nearby Forum " referring to a strange noise I have been hearing. Following a B service by a nearby "specialist" I was told it was bearings in the gearbox and a new box was required at a cost of £1500. They had confirmed this by running the car up on a ramp and using a stethoscope on the box. Being a cynical person I took it to James Leigh in Merton for a second opinion. Turned out the handbrake cable was rubbing on the propshaft which he fixed for nothing, together with a fuse which had blown. All done in 20 minutes. Can't recommend him highly enough. Saved me a load of money which a gullible person would have paid out.
Anyone in the SW London area should give them a try,
(I am in no way connected to this company)

I hope you told the "specialist" what the actual problem was? If it was an MB dealer I would complain like hell!

Well done :D

Can you PM me the name of the specialist please? I'd like to be able to avoid it if in the area.

Obviously, the forum is not the place to name and shame, but PM's to concerned owners are fine.

A sad tale, having been in the motor trade for over 35 years it's a story that's all too familiar. I can recall when I was an apprentice it was "drummed" into me that an extra hour spent diagnosing a problem was worth hours spent on the job trying to fix a fault that wasn't there:wink::wink:

Glad it worked out okay for you :D

Malcolm, it's basically a lack of skill in the workshop, poor training and in some case lack of interest. I blame the service managers / dealer principles for not maintaining a higher degree of training their staff :mad:
