Oil and filter
Is that all they do, I was quoted £85 plus VAT from my indie I'm not sure if that is good or bad seems quite expensive to me. Thanks for your prompt reply.

Well actualy they check your lights, oil locks and hindges generally check it over, but the basis is that it's an oil and filter change. If it's a newer Merc then they reset the service with Star as well as add it to the comp base for future resale and warranty/breakdown cover and stamp your book. If it's put on the star it automatically checks to see if it is due any flashes, (updates to the sofware).

If you check your service booklet it lists what is included in all the services. It is basically Oil & Filter as per above. If you supply your own Mobil1 you can get the price down even further.

I've just had my R171 done at 11k It costs £276.00 for it. As I'm a MB mech I could have done it myself, but I needed the warranty and the history as I intend px for another in the spring. I supplied all the parts £30 and got the minum charge for it .8hr £82.00 including VAT. Well chuffed as the breakdown cover etc is worth that to me.

Do you have the ASSYST service computer in your car? It is the ASSYST that decides A&B on the 'older' Mercedes and A-H on the new ones. I didn't think ASSYST went back as far as 95 so yours will be simpler and follow the service booklet.

Oil air fuel poss polen filter auto box oil and filter depending on th mileage visual inspection of brakes, not removing wheels and plugs if it's petrol. Most checks are visual you got to rember MB dealers charge £95 +vat upwards per hour and £20+ per ltr of oil most MB have 5+ltrs in thier engines full retail for kosher filters is 70%+ mark up. They dont even remove the sheild as the oil is sucked out of the dip stick, sadly, obviously check lights tyres/pressures and depth, check for flashes on star and reset assyst if fitted.

Not at the MB Dealer I use. They drain the oil out of the sump plug. I take a look at the crossmember for rust everytime it goes in for service.

That sounds right to me, sucking out the dip stick would take longer i would think, having changed the oil in a boat many times where you cant get access to the sump. Its a slow process and you never get it all out.

i don't have assyst so i guess i'll just let my local indie decide whats best,

next service due in about 5000km

i replaced the brake discs all round about a year and a half ago so i guess they should be alright, but the brake pads might need changing

cheers

A point of interest, depending on the model, the reset is not done by star. Its actually done in the car using the steering weel buttons.

So you can see Noops there is a bit more to it than most say. By the way, my dealer says A stands for approx one hour; B stands for approx two hours. It helps dealers when boioking you in. Even on the S class the A service only cost 1 hour's labour. The labour was £85 plus Vat and the total bill was £235. The very expensive low ash synthetic engine oil is a major cost but worth it.

Don't forget you get a 30 year rust guarantee and free breakdown cover if you keep FMBSH. The breakdown cover for a couple from the AA is £150 alone and if you want cover in Europe that is about £100 extra. MB service is great value if you look at it in detail.
