I've been offered a '57 reg V6 E320 that's had a bit of an incident.Apparently it made a 'ping' noise, the dash went red,the engine stopped, and a bit of smoke appeared from under the bonnet. The owner(whom I know well) told me that the only damage, from a cursory glance, seems to be to two wires going to the turbo area. The car won't turn over on the starter now,so-I have been offered it at a good price(not yet discussed). Is it worth contemplating.Any ideas as to cause and any further effects? I'll ask the piece of string question later.

Can you call out the AA/RAC to confirm the problem before you discuss price ?

It’s always a chance J.......has the damage gone further back up the loom and killed something very expensive like the engine ECU or just a small short on the loom..........I always consider the most expensive repair at worse way then if it turns out simple ( never does ) your quids in...........to kill the car dead like that, I suspect something pretty major has happened.........

With the complex electronics on these cars I would personally stay clear. Like Cole says if it's spead to other components then it could be a costly exercise. The fact that it would not start is worrying. Get it on a diagnostic machine to see if there were any errors reported and then go from there.

Thank you all for your input. Cole pulled me back from the edge of the precipice with this one,I think.
bembo: the car was being driven at the time, albeit slowly.

Wighty : Mileage is 177k approx, but all is academic now as I had decided that this was going to be a black hole
and when I went for a chat this morning, the owner told me he has decided to sell it off as parts.Still it would be
interesting to find out what happened.I'll try to find out and report back.

at that mileage it will have got well past a lot of the common faults , will be interesting to see if you can get a fault diagnosis pal

I heard that a starter motor fault causes this type of behaviour, albeit slightly older cars
