Travelling up A12 today and having fun with a 5 series BM trying to keep up and we run into the usual traffic jam in the 2 lane section before you get to Marks Tey turn off. Long line of lorries overtaking each other at 55 to 60 all the way up the hills, no problem there but the second car ahead of the F.Focus in front of me just sitting in the outside lane letting every lorry out!! Then we get past most of the lorries and the car in front of the Focus staying in outside lane at 65 to 70mph, leaving the inside lane unoccupied but I can see about a mile ahead that there are more lorries in the inner lane!
Anyway the Focus loses patience and as the road turns into three lanes the Focus undertakes the Mercedes ( as it turns out- a C class Kompressor in Silver/cream ) and leaves the Merc. in the outside lane, I close up on the Merc. and indicate that I want to overtake- I get ignored for approx. half a mile and I give him one flash of my lights- still ignored. The 5 series BMW closes up behind and undertakes us and puts his hand out of the window and makes an obscene gesture at us both- very embarassing, so I follow the BM and the merc stays in the outside lane holding everyone else up, I was so embarassed to be driving a merc as well, think I'll have to leave it at home and take the transit next time- what do you think- anyone we know on here!!!!

There's always one exception to the rule. You'll probably find that he used to drive a BMW and wanted to improve himself but left his brains in the other car.

I shouldn't think they would be keen to admit to it, even if they were Forum members! I guess that every experience is a learning experience? That is one more gesture to add to your repertoire!!

I just cant understand the logic of it, I had a good look as I passed to see if he/she was on the phone-No, but seemed to be a bit short and barely able to see over the steering wheel!!:(

I feel for you. Ignorant drivers, like the one you refer to, rev me up but (more obviously) never rev their own car up! They just toodle along in their own little zone totally unaware of the world going on around them.

Undertaking. Frowned on by some, but I am the first to admit that I have done so in situations such as this in cars and, without question, on my motorbike. Those horns do come out from time to time ;)

Normally frowned upon by the ones that have just been undertaken. But, if they had been driving with due care and attention (i.e. been in the correct lane) then there'd have been no reason to undertake them!

I travel 70 miles on the motorway every day to/from work and probably undertake a vehicle at least 3-4 times a week.

I'm sure I read somewhere last year that the Government were expecting reports from the Transport Authorities on allowing undertaking as in some other countries i.e. USA but they had reservations because of the drivers in this country being too unobservant to allow this to safely be allowed!!!

If there's room to undertake - there's room for the 'offending' driver to pull over.! I used to hate the M25 - mainly 4 lanes - 'the 'middle-laners' sit in lane THREE, what idiots..!!!! I did more undertaking there than anywhere else

Incidentally, on the 500+ mile journey from Bilbao to here, not a single, solitary incidence of 'lane-hogging' :D They pull out, overtake and pull in again - absolute magic

I must admit the M25 is the worst road for dodgy lane blocking and overtakes I've ever seen, when I used to do huge motorway miles I used to dread having to join the M25 on my way home.

I drive on the wretched M25 a lot with my work and usually late at night.

I hate drivers who hog the middle and outside lanes. grrrrrrr.....

Even worse now that I have just got my very first Mercedes and have so much power to play with.... left a mondeo standing on Sunday at the M25 -m11 section...hehehe..loved it!

Anyway, I also drive some in the USA and there undertaking is legal. I find it works well and gets around idiots hogging the middle/outside lanes, yes they are just as bad in the USA!

I think we should change the law here to allow under taking. But I also think the info boards that we now have alongside the road side ("Do not drink & drive" ...D'oH!) should display the following "Keep left unless overtaking"

The A12 is a killer when you are on the 2 lane sections... why oh why do lorries have to overtake each other when they have just a 2 or 3 miles per hour difference, it takes forever for them to pass each other?

If they can undertake in the Us, surely drivers in this country have the ability to do the same - you would think- unfortunately our government wont have the bottle to allow it to happen , they would obviously believe that common sense could not prevail!!
Having driven a few lorries in my time- not all lorries are made equal, some are good on the flat or downhills and others have the power to overtake on uphills but on the A12 it's - "got to get to the ferry on time" and "who cares about the cars that get in the way"!!

Yeah, I understand that, those spanish lorries sure do speed along! It is the big name companies who's lorries are set to speed restrictions who try to overtake each other that can clog up the lanes but I guess thats the only entertainment they have, after night after night doing the same route!

None at the monent, but there's an OM642 in the Jeep Grand Cherokee!
I sympathise with you to a large extent, but doing what you did can be a risky undertaking (pun intended!).

You would have had a 'sticky situation' if the 'offending' driver had attempted to return to the inside lane just as you were passing on the left. However justified you felt morally to do the undertake, you'd be on dodgy ground legally.

I regularly travel down a virtually-deserted four-lane section of the A1(M) near Peterborough late at night, and regularly come across people driving at 69.99 mph in lane 2. I pass them (depending on mood) by either:

1) creeping past in lane 1 at 69.992 mph - always being ready to use the hard shoulder in an 'emergency' or

2) approaching rapidly in lane 1, swinging out at the last minute into lane 3 the diving back into lane 1.

Both approaches are childish and indefensible
