I have a 2003/53 a140 classic LWB auto with 29k miles on the clock, vgc with MB ServHist.
After losing the power sterring I was told by my local MB dealer that the PAS pump had failed and was quoted £649. inc vat to replace it.:(
After further digging around I found that I could source a replacement pump with a 30 day guarantee warranty for £110 and get a local garage to fit it for £100 but obviously would not warrant the part or the work if once they put it on it did not work.
The car is still driveable but very heavy.
Is this a common fault and should I still be driving this.
I am not sure as to where to get it done as there is a massive difference in price - Any one got any ideas or suggestions???

It's an easy job to swop pumps, why not buy the used part & fit it yourself. Get some oil from MB (2 litres) & get your hands dirty!!

No consolation I know, but I do sympathise with you. I had a power steering pump fail on a BMW whilst on holiday in the south of France and returned back to the UK £600 the lighter. I later learned that the E46 was prone to this problem. I never thought the same could happen to a MB. :(

Hi
Do you know if your pas pump was electrical?

I'm sorry, not quite sure whether it was electrical or mechanical, IE belt driven. No doubt other members who have owned BMW's will know the answer.
