a140 steering problem

hi guys

i have a 2000 a140 a-class at 46k miles i have had one rear strut repalced and the exhaust is on the way out as well :rolleyes: but the real problem is the steering it makes a knocking sound when i turn it left and is very very heavy on its days some days (hot ones) its ok , my local gagare wont touch it ! is thier anywhere in london you can recommend where i can get this thing sorted fairly cheaply as merc are just raping me at this stage i have spent £800 on it and i only had it 1yr help someone please if not i got a service report by merc i could post if that helps

Steering colums are very comman on all 168 a-classes, the bearings within the upper jacket make knocking and clonking nosies.
this is not a bad job to do to replace this, its not half as dificult as it seems.
You must replace the ignition switch as this is distroyed if you try to remove it from the old colum.
any mechanic with a bit of gumpity should be able to do the job within a couple of hours!!

that's funny all garages i have spoken to including power steering services biggest in place london will not touch it and have run a mile !!

can someone pleae recommend a compatent merc garage that will sort this mess and how much should i expect to pay for this job ???

Its 3 hours labour and dead easy to do. Have a bash at it yourself. If you want to come down to portsmouth I will gladly do it for you.

hi guys

well i found a garage that will touch it but its still an arm and a leg £600 for the steering coloum to be replaced including parts of course what do you guys think ??

also anyone close to london , including posrtsmouth (thanks for the offer guy) if you can do it quite a bit cheaper then i can drive down to let you have a bash at it !!

well after a word with Mercedes specialist.(Portsmouth) (blackc55) i decided to have a word with merc dartford and they might sort this out for me free or at a discount afterall. I must stress blackc55 is a ace guy if i cannot get merc to redress this then he will be fixing my car.


big recomendation for blackC55 anybody looking for a honest guy then his your man !!!
