I have an A160 W168 1.6 Auto Elegance stuck in PARK at 78000 miles. Initially there was an F displaying on the dash and a P0705 fault was found with the diagnostics and also an ODBII scanner. The Auto Gear Select Assy has been exchanged for a fully working one. The F has now disappeared from the dash. With the main gear actuator cable detached from the Shift Assy the Shift Position Slider can be successfully moved to show PRND on the dash when the slider is moved and the dash beeps correctly when R is showing. When the position detector is moved to the R or D positions the engine noticeably revs slightly but the car still does not move. When the actuator cable is reattached to the Shift Assy the gear select remains in PARK and cannot be removed and the dash correctly shows the P for PARK. The P0705 is also reappearing every time it is cleared and re scanned. The battery has been fully charged and the engine starts perfectly every time. The Yellow Engine light is displaying on the dash and all other controls and functions seem to be OK.

One thing to add to the above is that when I first looked at the gear Shift Assy, before it was replaced, it was covered in yellow oil and the plastic shift framework had wells of oil in it.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to proceed, other than taking the Mercedes option of taking it to them for further diagnosis at some horrendous cost? Any assistance would be most welcome.

My first step would be to renew the ATF (auto trans fluid) and the filter in the transmission.

Thanks for the reply.

OK, What should I be looking at after doing that if the fault remains?

At best, it will highlight further things e.g. any oil ingress into the electrical connectors at the tranny end.
