CLK 320 ADVANTGUARDE CONVERTIBLE w208
Hi,

Just wanted to ask if anyone knows if it is possible to change the alternator, belt tensioner/roller and belt on the the above car. Hoping to do a DIY job myself but not to sure how easy / difficult it may be.

Shocking quotes:

ALTERNATOR £460 + VAT
DRIVE BELT TENSIONER AND ROLLER £121.40 + VAT
BELT £15 + VAT

LABOUR £135 + VAT

The above parts are genuine merc parts.

Can't really afford to depart with that much money. Just had a arm removed to pay for my bill on my 2001 CLK 320 convertible. £2K repair bill

Any advise would be appreciated.

TIA

Satty

£135 is around 1.5-2 hours so not a major job by the sound of it.
Drive belt and tensioner - try euro car parts for prices - though may not be cheaper.
Now Alternators......
I am always staggered when people discuss buying new alternators and alternators from dealers. I have never bought a new alternator in my life and never will.

The only things that wear out on alternators are the bearings and regulators. These can be easily and cheaply reconditioned by a local repairer (have a look in your phone book) or pick up a factory recon from a local motor factor. Eurocarparts have factory (Lucas) alternators for your car for £133.16. It's every bit as good (probably the same) as a dealer unit. If you pay £460+vat I have no sympathy for you!

I may have an alternator problem too

Hi,

My 170CDI just started playing up. At low revs the battery warning light comes on, the steering goes stiff and there is an odd noise, not a squeeling, more of a whooshing. When the engine is given some revs everything is OK again. I've looked and the alternetor pulley appears to be turning. Could it be the alterantor is on its last legs. The car has only done 28K!

Your problem is not the alternator, but the serpentine belt on the front of the engine is lose or the idler pulley(a common fault) goes faulty,The noise is the belt slipping, the alternator is then running to slow and the light comes on.
