Hiya,

Since changing the engine on my second hand 1999 A class, apart from a lack of power I had a problem with the gear stick blocking and getting a F reading on the panel. I took it to a Merc specialist who diagnosed it but said there were so many faults (possibly from when the engine was changed) that he cleared the memory and I had to drive again until it failed. On cue it started again so upon returning he found that a wire was twisted. Fixing that the car ran like new.
2 months later the gears started slipping (heavy jolting when going into a higher gear) a week or so later the F came up again last night. I have just left it in the garage again where the diagnostic said that it was a problem with the turbo and/or gear box and he thinks that the lack of power causes the F reading.

Is it worth getting fixed?? I have now spent nearly £ 3000 on this car on various things (engine (bad maintenance by my previous mechanic), cracked suspension coil, burnt out rubber seal, new indicator stick) in the last 3.5 years not to mention the cost of taxis etc when it is in the garage being fixed. I bought a Merc because of their reputation - maybe I just got a dud one??

This should just be the MAF.

Welcome to the forum,,so sad that you have had all those problems,,some of the earlier cars were not good

depends on if or where its slipping, if its slipping 1st to second or poss into 4th. either way its a gearbox strip. if its stuck in F might be more serious, depends if it can be reset. needs reading 1st. after a number of slips the ecu will trip into F.

My mechanic just called to say that it was an engine valve that had gone which cut power from the engine and effected the gearbox. He said that it is a valve which is common to go in Mercs if the engine is hot. I live in Spain and also have to sit in the Gibraltar/Spain border queue with the engine on for up to 1.30 hours one way everyday which probably doesn´t help. A new valve, indicator stick, wing mirror (my fault) + labour + vat = £ 490

The slipped was not between gears but rather when going into gear it would jolt and not properly engage...

Fair comment,,I was thinking of the engine being down and forced it into this mode
