A170CDI - MAF problem?

Have a problem with my A170CDI (1999, 60k) which is showing the symptoms of a faulty air mass sensor - intermittent lumpy/rough idle, down on power and hesitates (almost stalls) sometimes when pulling away.. I have cleaned the EGR and replaced the air filter, but after reading other threads, I might be looking at the MAF next?

Telephoned a number of Diesel specialists and they each told me that the MAF on this car comes 'built into' the ECU module, the MAF can't be cleaned and a whole new unit is only obtainable via main dealer (expensive).

Anyone had a similar experience with this car.. not sure where to take this next - maybe to an independent garage for checking over..

common fault sadly. All you can do really is search the internet for the best price for a new one.

Two firms now offer reconditioned MAF/ECU for you car. You do not have to buy a new one

anyone know if thats true? the maf on a-class built into ECU?!?! that seems a weird thing, why would you link two components like that. that would be damn expensive?

Not on a diesel.

The air mass is part of the engine control unit on petrol versions not diesels.

Some of the A170cdi's don't have an air mass sensor and some do. The early ones don't from memory. The screw holes are there but its blocked off.

Its behind the oil filler cap. Have a look.

It sounds more like an injector problem.

Thanks for the great info. Just checked behind the oil filler & there's a blanking cap with two screw holes as you described - looks like my A170 doesn't have a MAF after all.

I'll do a search on recommended MB garage services in the Merseyside area, as this is my next move.

Thanks again.

The 168008 is the first of these and a MAF is shown

Took the car to a local MB 'indy' garage & they came up with a fault on diesel injectors 3 & 4 (codes read from diagnostic equipment). Received a quote from the garage - to replace both faulty injectors - which was £610 including labour. Injectors are approx £180 to £200 each.. & removing them from an A170 CDI is a pig of a job (their words).

Without taking the car to another garage for a second opinion & an alternative quote, does this cost seem about right for the work involved? I have heard that there are companies which specialise in diesel injectors and can clean them by the ultrasonic 'bath' method, or even repair faulty items, but I have no actual experience of this to comment on.. Anyone had this kind of work carried out on their car, as it must be cheaper than buying new.

thanks Rsspoff
