Hi,

I have a A180 2006 which seems to have dodgy front window wipers. (fuses checked all ok)

I've done a bit of internet research and it seems that proper attachment of the wiper arm to the spline stub if critical, and they do look a bit wonky when in the "rest/off" position. (see attached, i.e. think they should be horizontal and parallel)

My intention is to take them off and move a notch or 2 around the spline shaft to set a better alignment.

My question is does anyone have an knowledge of the wiper control logic? e.g. if the blades brush or catch each other during operation, do the blades shut down as a protection? and if so for how long? and is a ignition off/then on again required to get them moving again? Do they also shutdown if overloaded?

It's my wife's car and seems to have happen when a large-ish amount of rain or spray/splash hits the blades. This is either overloading them or getting them to touch when passing and hence causing the shutdown.

Or perhaps it's a known fault? e.g. multi function control stick, rain sensor, motor mechanism lubrication/wear/fault?

Regards,

James

If the wipers stop dead, instantly, then it’s more likely to be an electrical issue, think twice before making adjustments until you have more information on the fault. See… http://www.aclassinfo.co.uk/mypage.42.htm

Your wiper does look a bit out of line alright but that doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s the cause of the fault.

If you could make a video so as to capture when the fault happens then this would help to determine if there is any blade to blade contact taking place. You could use a garden hose/bucket of water to replicate the fault.

Thanks Dec,

Do you know if the motor has any protections, e.g. overheat. As the wiper will general work for a few minutes in any setting, then stop. It then takes a few minutes to recover them, turning the ignition off and just waiting. The delay between working and not working seems to get longer, e.g. first break might be 90 seconds, then a few more minutes working then 5 minutes to get them going.

While waiting to get them going again, making selections with the multi function control stick causes a relay type clicking sound or similar sound somewhere in the dash. Making me think the multi function control stick is working but the signals are being prevented from reaching the wiper motor.

Could wear and tear or resistance in the wiper crank assembly be causing the motor to say "no thanks" and cut out?

Next job I guess would be to have the water tray out and have a good look around in there.

p.s. thanks for the aclassinfo link, I've already had a good read. ta

You could try moving one of the wiper arms out and away from the screen that would eliminate the possibility of the wiper arms interfering with each other.

It does sound like the motor is jamming and probably has some sort of overheat protection cutting in as you suggest.
