have a search for posts by hawk 20 - he has given great descriptions of both the elegance & avantgarde versions - has one of each - also his brother has a 160. my reading is that the 180 sounds a very good car and while the 160 does have amazing economy it sounds as if the average hearse is quicker - you pays your money............

Some Thoughts On The A Class

My brother has a 160cdi manual and regularly gets 65mpg or better on a run.
My eldest daughter has a 180cdi Avantgarde manual and I was in it with them at the weekend when they got around 60mpg on a run.

The mpg figures are all on the MB website.

My wife and I now both have automatic 180cdi's and it is easy to get over 50mpg on a run. Pretty hard to drop below 45mpg.

I'm off to the MB website for data and will post again.

The 160cdi has a combined economy figure of 57.6 mpg (with an amazing 65.7 extra urban). That is manual. The auto is 52.3 combined. The 0-62 time is 15 secs manual and 15.3 auto.

For only an extra £1300 you can get the 180cdi which is a good deal brisker at 10.8 seconds 0-62. AND YET the economy is not much less. The manual is only 3mpg less than the 160cdi.

The remarkable bit though is the automatic which in the 180 version does the same MPG as the 160cdi (a combined figure of 52.3mpg). Believe it or not, the extra urban figure for the 180cdi automatic is 64.2 mpg. And this is a car which AutoExpress claimed had the same interior space as an E class.
