2011 E220 CDI 2.1 diesel blue efficiency Auto Cabriolet
Hi everyone, I just wanted to share some info I found out about last week and was amazed.
I have a 2011 E220 CDi cabriolet and was braking one day and I heard a slushing sound, I thought it was the diesel in my tank. I googled it and found this video..the guy in the video had thought the same issue.

(Link may have to be copied/pasted in YouTube)

Anyway it's really easy, two plastic plugs unscrew from the rear jack points each side and I must of got about 5 litres out of each side!

Hope this helps someone else

Amazing. Exceptional build quality Mercedes, shame MB don’t advertise an onboard swimming pool as a feature on their modern sh!t boxes.

Never touched the drains on my 24/27 year old cars as they just work and interiors have alway been dry.

I did this, linking that vid last year at some point.

Drilled a small hole in the plug before replacing.

Might get 'bunged' up with crud eventually, but I did a 2 to 3 litre delete of ballast on my car when doing this.

Well worth doing!
Will be doing it again in the Spring, just to check

So checked my 'bungs' and completely dry. Did a bit more research on this, water is meant to drain from holes as a matter of course *somewhere else* in the run, so these bungs are in case those holes are blocked. That would make sense, sort of. But I'm vague on where said holes are meant to be as little info available. But I will have a good look when the weather warms up a bit. I guess as our cars age, more info will arise but for the time being, all we can do is regularly inspect our bungs or possibly the dealers will know. Another engineering oddity from our much loved marque!

Not just MB, they all do it to some degree. The other year EmilysMum messaged me to say she could hear water sloshing in her C3 when cornering, drains in the scuttle were blocked with leaves. The moving water had dislodged the cabin filters allowing water to pour into the car over the heater fan. It took ages to dry the carpets.
Though I never had the problem with my Omega, the Omega had a drain at the bottom of the cabin filter housing which would tend to block. Again the water would overflow into the car.

I very much doubt a dealer would ever check water and remove the bungs and if they would at the request of a driver hearing sloshing noises it would cost silly money.
If that was my car I would take the bungs out and toss them in the bin.

Yes that's probably the most practical solution!

Don’t the bungs hold the jack points in place ?

This looks like a bung within that jacking point tab so the bung itself would not impact the jacking (imo)

In my w221 thread, I’ve mentioned that the garage found the same water park on my n/s sill, had to remove a bing to clear it. Apparently some dirt was blocking the drain point.

Benz are crap at keeping water of of thier cars and parts thereof. The water ingress rest must be 30 sec in light drizzle. One wud hav thought, there wud be a filter on top of drains that wud block prior to obstructed drain tubes in an accessible place. It's not a small prob. Benz must be aware. It's hard to believe this issue cannot be engineered away.. Makes it thru warranty story again methinks.

The manufacturers have even said their shite just has to get past the warrant my period and that is why all modern stuff is white and can’t make its past 5 minutes without fvcking up.

I was looking at a Cayenne and an S8 around 2015… Googling shows these are also no strangers to having water parks as a feature! Everything I see is just utter modern shire that can’t last 5 minutes and just work as a car should.

My 25/30yr old Toyota and Volvos.. nothing, not a single moment of down time, no headaches, no water ingress, never cleared the drains as they always drain as they should.

Agreed. All attempts at longivity are near non exist and and no longer a business model for makers. New scheme is apple system, have updates degrade phone whilst keeping owners in the dark and hav people lining up half km around the block for latest launch. Clever stuff treating customers like lemmings and getting away with it.

Got rid of my C207 because it had water ingress. Couldn't cure it.
Checked all the drains and it still ****ed in. The nearside rear mat would float.

My question is, not only is this terrible as all water drains should simply exit out of the car and not into other areas and hope it drains but, where is this water coming from in the first place to collect in the sills?

As a fix I’d probably look at drilling a hole and putting a heroic rubber bung in, something one can easily whip out and in to treat as easy maintenance.
