I have been getting intermittent messages about the ABC. It resets after restart and the ABC system works until the message reappears. Took it to an Indie with 'Star' and it was diagnosed as an error with B22/4 Left Front Plunger Travel Sensor. This sensor looks to be an integral part of the left front shock to me. This is on an AMG S55 (2002) with 30k miles. The error message seems to appear after about 15 minutes of driving.

Does anyone know what is involved with this repair and could it be an electrical problem from somewhere else. The error messages seemed to start after a flat battery episode during the cold weather, but that could have been coincidental. Would appreciate any help.

first thing to to rather than start spending loads of money, is to get the system flushed with new fluid, hopefully this will resolve

B24/4 can also be the the acceleration sensor, and there are three of them. Yes the travel sensor is built into the strut, and they cost £950 plus fitting.

My car sometimes puts up the ABC visit workshop, and a turn off and on fixes it for the rest of the journey, though you lose the sport and height function they drive perfectly.

I can let you have details of the 3 other sensors

Thank you Malcolm I got it. The code seems a little different though B22/4 as opposed to B24/4.

My first thought on the Star diagnosis was that the sensor was faulty (the Indie thought that too). However that thought is not too pleasant with a potential £1500 bill looming. I am now thinking that the sensor is reporting an error in the strut somewhere. Since the sensor acts like a metallic rod in a solenoid reporting the current that is picked up from a moving magnet etc, it could be one of a number of things causing an anomaly. As Guv says it could be a fluid problem or even air in the system. Am I grasping at straws here?

Sorry I missed read the number 22/4 been sitting here too long.

Just to fill you in on mine, I got 1 or 2 messages for the first 6 months, then 2 struts started to leak. 2 new ones fitted, and the message came up after ever start, it went back to be bled, and it was much better. A valve came lose in the valve block on the return system and I lost all of the fluid, and limped home 25 miles. I filled it and the system was bled. 12 months later a washer failed and I lost half of the fluid, I have re filled and get the message every day now, the system does need bleeding again.

After the car has been on the rodeo setting it went for weeks and no message, so one tiny air bubble can turn the warning on.
These sensor operate through the can system (front) and I had both go down on mine.
As mine stands today with air in the system the warning can come on as soon as I start the car, turn off an on and its ok for miles and it can do a 300 mile journey without coming on.

Thanks for that Malcolm, it really points out how incredibly sensitive this system is.

Incidentally while I was at the Indie with the Star system yesterday I mentioned your point about turning off the TPMS system and though he hadn't heard of it he tried and succeeded in simply turning it off. He needed to turn it off in the RDK system and the Instrument Cluster System apparently. I was so pleased with that result since the MB dealer said it could not be done.

Pleased that he took that away, and a pain when not working,

I am studying all functions od the ABC and I have sent you a location of all components.-

This is all heavily tied into the CAN and other parts

I thought I would try some unconventional remedies for the intermittent ABC error messages. Each time I went out for a pleasure drive the message would appear. Figuring this only started after a flat battery episode I re-tried the lock to lock exercise three times and ran the height adjuster half way then max and back to half way and off. So far, after 4 pleasure drives, there has been no sign of the error message. I have my fingers crossed etc.
