E class 2017 220d 4 Matic
hi - I’ve driven Audis A4,5 Quattros,6 over the past 20 or so yrs and about to leave the 4 rings for the star of the Mercedes 220d e class 4Matic ( 2017) AMG basic and not Premium or Premium plus( as these seem to be between £5-8K more!) . I’m used to the excellent lumbar and neck support ( adjustable head rest) available in the Audi A6 Sline 2016 car and hope for the same degree of comfort in the E320d. Is there anything I should look out for during the test drive - before I make the final commitment?

Welcome James
I think you’ll like the E220( W213), it’s a well sorted car and the 9spd box is excellent
Lumbar is good
Having had an A6 S LINE black series Avant I reckon the 213 is a much better machine , particularly driving its RWD

Hi James and welcome to the forum. I can’t compare to Audi but I’m on my second Mercedes now and it’s been a far better ownership experience than previous BMWs.

Thanks John - The lumbar support is critical to me so it’s good to know that it is indeed good

Not sure about the E Class but, on mine, the lumbar support button is down on the right side of the seat base with all other controls (including headrests) on the door.

They made “comfort” seats standard in 2017 (I think) on the E - Class, before that you could chose uncomfortably ones...

The “comfort” option is the air lumbar bags controlled by the switch by your right thigh (left hand drive...)

Welcome James#B! The Lumbar I've realised is way superior on our choice of cars, I've had many cars with very mediocre seat supports. It's a really crucial piece of kit agreed James#B and especially on longer runs. Mine has the multi-contour set up, I am sure James#B that yours will have a nice update to my older lady. Even on mine at 7 years old now, the whole Mercedes ownership has been great for me and I hope its the same for you. Agreed Wighty on the rear wheels, its a crazy, ridiculous monster on anything other than a dry surface! The 4matic is a wise choice I think! Plenty of power but in a controlled and safe way!

Hi Harrey500 ! I picked up the car today and drove 2.5 hrs home. My car is the AMG spec do it has lumbar adjustment. Car handles magnificently. Audi lumbar adjustment is superior in that it is a cam shape bar ( appears to be ) which rotates as well as moving up and down so find the perfect support spot. I have a slipped disc and I’m struggling to set the lumbar support & car seat height a good position in the new car. Will persevere for another day or two .

We’ll after a week of owning : the handling is sure, surprisingly agile and steering is accurate, responsive with good feedback from the road - it handles like a much smaller car. Despite being a 4Matic, the fuel consumption ( combined but particularly on the motorways) is significantly less than my previous 2016 A6 line diesel Ultra - start stop is more responsive as is acceleration even in eco mode . I opted to purchase the 48 month maintenance package . Comfort is O.K ( wider foot well - particularly as the left foot is inactive and really needs a level foot support as opposed to an oddly inward sloping foot support). I note that both my headlights have condensation : is this normal ?

At this time of year and temperature, yes. When it warms up it should go away. I was in a GLC a couple of weeks ago, in the morning the nice LED headlights had condensation all over them. By the afternoon they were both clear as day.

Thanks #Bobcat . I thought that they are sealed units hence my concern - especially as it’s both headlamp units - and after a dealer car wash !
