About to order an SLK 280

After months of thinking about and wanting an SLK 200K, I have recently driven a 280 and was impressed with the power but more importantly loved the engine note. Speed and power arnt that important to me, but having a convertible hard top is, and that V6 sound is a delight. This would be my first V6 car and first convertible.

The whole reason I was thinking of getting the 200k was for fuel economy, since I do a 30 mile round trip for work everyday. Most of it is town driving and stop/start traffic, with very few straight runs. I travel from Hounslow to new malden through kingston (if anybody knows that run).

Does anybody know what kind of fuel consumption I can expect, and how much of a difference there is between the 200k and 280. The car will be with an auto box. It will be the facelifed SLK due out in april. I guess my driving style is relaxed but occasionaly I would like to put my foot down for those clear straights. I am in two minds about which car to choose, I have the order forms ready to be submitted this week.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks.

Buy the car you WANT. Not the car that makes sense. If we all did that, none of us would be driving around in a Mercedes anyway.
Follow your heart and dont be swayed by inconsequential things like money or sense.

Anything else would not tick all the boxes.

I appreciate what you've said and I agree. It is a car I want with my heart, always wanted a convertible, and especially a hard top. Unfortunately fuel costs are important to me as im working on a tight budget. By the time I take delivery of the car i should hopefully be more financially secure. Does anybody have experience with an SLK 280?

This may be of some help, in the case of the 129, the 280 was too underpowered for the weight as against the 320.. Yes the fuel consumption was about the same

The SLK is lighter, and that is a lousy journey that you do so if you got 30 ish in those conditions that would be about the max as they do 35 ish on a run.

Big snag is that people drive a bigger engined car faster than the smaller version and any benefits get lost

Cheers for that mate, if I can get MPG's in the upper 20's then that would be great. My golf 1.6 T reg used to get about the same. your completely right that it is a very crap run to work, got to find a new route. Is it possible for a dealer to let you test drive a car for a week or so to see what it is like to live with? Also has anybody got an SLK 280 that they could comment on?

There are quite a few on the forum, some members only post in the eve, other only sometimes.

I had no trouble getting 29mpg in town in my 320 v6 SL that I had.

Seriously, thats amazing. I would never expect an SL 320 to get those types of figures for town driving. Mind you, what is your driving style?

I've got one!
When I ordered mine I was in a different delemer, 200 or 350? I drove both and to honest the 350 was awesome, but I went for the 200. Why, £10k cheaper, group 14 insurance, 350 20+, better fuel economy, although that was not a huge issue, as it is 3 yrs old and only has 16k on it, so huge fuel bills it does not have. The 200 is quick, if you want it to be and sounds quite good, try blasting it through a tunnel, however not as good as the 350/280. A big thing for me was the possible resale and I still feel the 200k will resell better than the 350/280, speed is not a huge issue, I've never had it over 100 and although you'll always get some one wanting to race you, especially with the roof down???? I dont realy thrash it, I prefer to get on a twisty 60 mph road and drive it through. Fuel consumption, if it's driven hard 25mpg, but I can get 37 mpg keeping it below 85 mph. However, like you I'm looking to change it and a 280 would probably swing it for me, as I think the v6, is one of the best MB make. Worth pointing out the 280/350 v6 are all the same 3.0 ltr engines just the ecu is set up different. Just make sure you get the options right, thats the bit that makes it nice and will help the resale.
Hope it helps.

Your right in saying the 200k will sell better. Its still harder to find 280's on the market. If your getting up to 37mpg, thats excellent, so im hoping the 280 i get will get around 30. But it will be all town driving for me. The options ive chosen is an SLK 280 obsian black with orient beige/cream leather. heated seats, airscarf, cd changer, command and telephone prewiring. I was told that the airscarf and command would definately help the resale value. The 200k is fun to drive, and the same goes for me that speed isnt an important factor, its just that V6 noise i love.

Mines Black too, all I would say is have another look at the command, lot of money for what it is, in my opinion. Also the six discs kills the glove box, check out the mp3 player option, your's should have a jack in the glove box and fits straight in with the controls etc.

You must have been pushing it. ;)

Or, did you carry it around on a transporter?

Today ive been told that I can honestly expect the low 20's for mpg, which i suppose is acceptable considering what type of car it is. But does that sound about right to all you lot? If i get up earlier for work ill beat the traffic too. Im sure the car will be enough incentive to help me wake up in the mornings earlier.

Thanks for all the help guys. Im submitted the order form tomorrow for a facelifted SLK 280 obsidian black with orient beige leather, and all the toys.

Would you not be better buying a demo car and saving some money or getting a SLK350 demo with all the toys? I think that is what I would do rather than getting a new one

Hiya

Got my SLK280 in Jul-07 and have been doing a similar journey to you (Chertsey - Teddington) everyday. I get somewhere between 24-27mpg around town.

Hope this helps.

One other thing...I hope you got a good deal on your ordered car. I found that local dealers where not at all interested in giving much discount. Ended up buying mine from MB Manchester with 9% discount. Well worth the trip up. Let me know if you want details of the guy I dealt with up there. He was excellent.

Chertsey B, 24 - 27 mpg is not bad at all. Especially if you have a similar run to me. I go through teddington on my way to work, use the stretch of queens road to get to kingston. If that is the case, 24 - 27 mpg, im highly inpressed and can live with that. Well the order is in now, I can expect delivery in June. As soon as Ive got the baby i will have pictures up. Thanks to everyone that posted and helped me out. And yes I got a fantastic deal from MB world in brooklands, they are the most helpful and delightful bunch. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them, they treat you like royality the minute you walk in.

You're gonna love the car. Surprised by your impression of MBWorld at Brooklands. They are my nearest dealer, but were utterly uninterested when I was trying to test drive and place an order. They seemed more interested in the joy rides for the kids on the test track.

I had to wait around for a sales assistent (more than 30 minutes). They were unable to source a manual car for test drive and didn't want to discuss price. Glad you got better service.

Worth pointing out the 280/350 v6 are all the same 3.0 ltr engines just the ecu is set up different. QUOTE]

Sorry, they're not. 230 V6 is a 2.5, 280v6 is a 3.0 & 350v6 is a 3.5
The 280/320 CDi engines are both basically the same, both being 3.0

I must admit, this type of V6 (272 engine) sounds fantastic:twisted::cool:
