Has anyone had this problem? Both lights are illuminated at all times. They came on together about a month ago and has been on ever since? I saw a few posts saying it could be the brake light switch--but I was wondering if a bad switch would make both lights come on.

Thanks for the help

Yes. It can't be sure when you are braking, but then I presume that the BAS would need the ABS to be in working order (or the BAS would be more rather than less dangerous) so it doesn't prove much. Usually, a restart gets the lights to go off and they don't come on again until you press the brake pedal so if they are staying on all the time, it could imply another fault.

They are on all the time---even before I hit the brake pedal. Took it to the dealer and they said that a wire was shorting out against the body of the car. They said the wire was in the tray along the firewall. Took it to my mechanic and we both looked at the wires and could find no break in the insulation. Dealer wanted $500 to fix (basically to wrap a wire)--I declined repair and paid for 2 hrs labor

Whip it back to the dealer - you paid for the diagnostic so its only fair that they show you where the fault is. They you can decide the best way to fix it.

ABS,EPS,BAS,Brake Lining faulty

I have been having a few problems with my mercededs 230 kompressor (4 years old). After a long distance drive my car would suddenly drop down into safe mode (1st gear) and display 4 faults on the computer: ABS, EPS, BAS and Brake Lining Faulty. The 1st time this happened an engine light was displayed in on the dashboard, and has been on constantly since. When i leave the car over night or for a good few hours, the other 4 faults seem to get ok, and i am able to drive again, with no malfunctions.
this is an ongoing problem, and a very serious one as i drive with children in the car. Has any1 got any ideas as to what could be wrong?

I had the BAS and ASR lights coming on on my '98 W202. No particular pattern - the odd occasion to start not related to braking or anything. Then came on pretty much every time I started the car in the morning but not so often in the evening.

Anyway, as advised by many of the folkes on this forum I had the brake switch changed (garage confirmed extremely common fault) and everything tickety boo again. Yes, it does make BOTH lights come on. I didn't have any other lights coming on though. The switch was a couple of quid which at current exchange rates is probably worth about $2,000!

I just had the same fault on my 99 w202 C200. The BAS/ASR light used to come on randomly. Took it to the local garage and they found the actual brake switch was "sticky" (mechanic showed it to me in my hand). They ordered the new part and replaced it for me. The light hasn't come back on since whilst driving :)

the one fault you are all talking about can be down to a RPM sensor, on all models esp,abs need to know correct wheel speed on each wheel, yes brake light swich is not uncommon but if lights are on all the time and brake light swich replaced then rpm sensor is the norm..

You can tell if it's the RPM sensor because the cruise control stops working as does the automatic locking as you take off from stationary.
