Hi all,

I'm a newby in the forums.
I have heard or read somewhere that I can avoid expensive repairings costs of my ABS ( C180 Elegance, 1999) by swapping the ABS with the windscreen liquid level indicator and trick the MOT as the lamp will light up in the key position 2 and will turn off after starting the engine and will not show any malfunction afterwards.
Perhaps it sounds a little bit naive but I hate the ABS anyway.
Can anyone tell me where is the connector of the ABS located which is similar to the one of the windscreen liquid level in the plastic tank (as I can't find it) or wheather it requires a little bit more than a simple swapping, say cutting connectors or any sort of re-wireing.

Thanks,

Humberto

Any good MOT tester would soon spot this as there is a time out for the ABS lamp

Hi,
Welcome to the forum,
Depending on year the ABS wheel sensors can provide an input to other systems on the vehicle.
By bypassing the ABS warning light you not only bypassing a safety feature of the car you are also acknowledging the fault (inspection of the vehicle after an accident the brakes would classified as faulty) fixing your ABS may only require the sensors and the teeth on hub to be cleaned.
Failing that 9/10 it will be a faulty sensor at £40-50 you might even get a 2nd hand one for a lot less. For definitive diagnosis on which sensor you will have to have the codes read or measure the resistance acroos each sensor.
I had reservations about ABS, when I changed to my first ABS equipped vehicle, but it did,nt take me too long to realise it can only improve braking performance for me and my family/passengers and other road users I may come across.

Hi there.

As previously mentioned, it's not a good idea to by pass the ABS light. I had issues with mine, and through process of elimination, found it to be the multiplug actully connected to the ABS pump.

The light would never come on while driving, but sometimes come on after startup, and another possible cause is a brake light switch funnily enough, as it has 2 sets of terminals.

It's better to have it working right, as you dont want to be caught out after an accident.

Many thanks to all of you guys. I think I will end up just pushing the plastic at my indie, which is a lot cheaper than having an accident being on the wrong side of the law.

wise decision. Its a perfect excuse for your insurance company to abandon you if you hit anything (or one).
Like most of you I started without abs and had some reservations but after I found myself facing a hidden 90 degree turn at 40mph on a worn, gravelly road (with a ditch straight ahead), and was still on the road after the corner, I became a convert.
