Hi, I have a 1991 230CE Auto when i start the engine the ABS light comes on, i have checked the battery with the lights on & its shows 14.1

I have read other posts about ABS faults & the main concensus is to check the overvoltage relay fuse which is located near the battery.

Behind the battery there is ECU unit approx 15cm square and another unit half the size behind it.
Looking at the ECU from the front of the car there is a black box between the ECU and the wing.

Also behind the ECU there is another box/relay?with the numbers 003 545 20 05 and what looks like a bar code below it.
Which one is the overvoltage relay fuse located in and do i need to remove the ECU first to gain access.
Thanks for any info

nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
On many 124 cars the OVP is hidden (presumably from the damp) by a black plastic cover about 50mm square and 80 mm high.
On mine its mounted onto the bracket which carries the ABS controller, in front of the ABS, behind the battery and nearest the inner wing.
The securing clips for both the relay and cover can be lifted with a small screw driver, when you find them.
Have a look at that black box you mention I do belive its the cover.

Thanks

I have now sourced the correct part from Euro carparts, as this is the first time that I have had problems with my 1990 230ce, I was just wondering if the 2nd issue OVP's can play up ? Having checked the one on my car it has the 2 fuses (intact) and not from what I can gather the problematic single fused one. Does anyone know of anything else that throws up the same symptons, ABS light's up engine dies even though running smoothly before the light comes on ? I have also reseated the relay and managed to get the car back closer to home. Thanks again for all the help.

In the early day it was bad soldering that plagued them, the Irish versions were the best. before 1990 only mainly the ABS is affected other than ASR equipped cars and they have always used the 9 pin versions. The later cars it affected the idle. Only 9 pin versions sold now

Thanks for all this info

My final question is does the OVP affect the alternator/battery charging ? Without the battery light coming on ? Thanks again.

The OVP relay does not affect the charging at all
