I had to jump start my 1985 280se as it had been off the road for 18 months and in doing so it blew a relay causing the abs warning light to be on all the time and consequntly failed the mot, apparantly this is a common occurance when jump starting.

They do say that when you jump a car both cars should have the lights / wipers / heated rear window switched on. Basically because there is a very high chance that there will be a power surge at some point of the start, mainly on the donor car when the jump leads are disconnected. By having one of these items switched on, they will absorb the surge without damage to any other electrical components. Unfortunatly in your car it looks like the surge has blown a relay. Sorry it couldnt help you this time, but may be of use if doing it again in the future. Cheers

Why does it give you a CGI Time out, but still post the reply, is this why we keep getting multiple replies that are the same?

Maybe the moderators need to do a little maintainance, perhaps even a "B" service!!

abs light

Hi All,

For a good number of years know there has been a good chance of blowing various relays on the vehicles, and most are protected by an overload protection relay. BUTTTTTT, the younger the vehicle the higher the chance of major relay's/ECU'S being fried by jump starting. You would be well advised ESPECIALLY on late vehicle to be especially carefull of how you jump start the vehicle. It could be expensive.

Try putting a low or some charge into the battery before attempting to start the vehicle.

Regards

Thanks Dave ,yes I had a secondhand unit from a local mechanic.
This is my first MB I am more used to a FIESTA.I was really lucky with this car as it had been on the forecourt of a local garage (but a private sale) since Feb 01 at £1750 ,I offered £500 and finaly agreed £850 as it needed 2 tyres £80 and a front exhaust£95,the m.o.t failed it on the abs light and wipers,so I have myself a limo for the price of Sierra.
