it should reset after three goes

if there is no persistent fault. The brakes will work as per old-fashioned non-ABS ones if the light is on. If it doesn't reset after 3 starts, see a mechie or search here on ABS light/sensors.
The light on our SL came on after we had to brake hard enough for the system to work. I couldn't see anything wrong, but booked it in anyway. Sure enough, the third start cleared the warning, but I let my mechie have a look anyway as I'm still getting used to the car.

did an ohms test:
o/s/f ABS Sensor 685ohms
n/s/f Abs Sensor 0 ohms me thinks this is the prob!
Rear sensor in from diff (in boot) 0.001 ohm

on Volts when spinning wheel:
o/s/f 1v when spinning
n/s/f 1 to 2v no matter if you spin wheel or not! again i think this is at fault!

what do ya think guys?

you might have it by the ears there

98 was the change from one to two rear sensors. sounds like you're early rather than late. I can't believe I paid 17squid for a manual that tells me to go to the dealers if the ABS light stays on. Sorry i can't come up with anything more constructive.

ABS very sensitive to voltage dropping below 12V, then light will come on, have you checked your battery is in good state of charge?

This might be worth a look
I had the ABS light intermittantly lighting up on my 98 (S) plate C180, took it to my local independant who plugged it in the diagnostics (£40) and informed me it was the electronic switch under the footbrake that had gone down. he replaced it while I waited for £15 and all was well again in 30minutes.
