hey all...i just got a 230e 1989 after having probs with my 190e. I gave up and went flasher :D Now, when the car is started the abs light goes out. While the abs light is out the brake pedal kicks back and you can feel the front brake grabbing. Typically the abs light comes on after 5 mins of driving...or one hard brake. It tends to go out more often then it is on since its been getting driven (and the brakes were hosed due to squeling). No matter what the situation the pedal always kicks back harshly when doing below about 20 km. Although it is begining to stop this.

Advice?

Ive heard cruise control is related to this..it seems to work ok.

regards

josh

ABS sensor?

Have you tried replacing the sensor? They can be problematic on the W124........

Especaily as you hosed the brakes, it may have been dislodged, or water logged the connector?

Best,

Jim

abs

hi,kiwi bloke,
i get the same thing happening on my 91 260e w124,although the abs light never comes on. All that happens is that at low speeds just before coming to a stop the abs kicks in(pulsing the pedal).
i had the sensors cleaned out and it stopped for a while but now its back.Let me know how you fix it as im at my wits end.
260e also runs like a dream( apart from the aformentioned problem!)

abs

Thought id let you all know that i cleaned out the sensors. The Abs decides to work on and off now. Sometimes the light comes on when driving sometimes it goes off. Generally it still comes on when exceeding the 10km mark.No kicking pedal now so its all good....im not worrying about it.....

cheers all

josh...

ps. this site is great! fixed a noisy taping noise by looking at previous thread. Turned out to the a leaking manfold gasket...tightened the bolts good as gold now!

My '88 Jag used a similar ABS mechanism and they had similar faults. It sounds like an ABS sensor failing, you will have to isolate which it is and replace it. On the Jag (as I said, same parts) the home mechanics' approach was to jack up the wheels connect a multimeter to each ABS sensor in turn and spin the wheel. Look at the readout as the wheel spins and you should get approximately +/- 1.0 volt readout. Anything below about 0.8 volt is a failing sensor. There are more sophisticated techniques but this works as a rule of thumb. You'll probably find one sensor with a consistently lower reading than the others and there is your culprit. Sometimes you can get away with swapping sensors from one side to the other, don't ask why...

Incidentally I think it's related to traction control if you have it, not cruise control. It uses the ABS sensor on the rear to detect a spinning wheel and then corrects by application of brake on the spinning wheel...

thanks all

thanks guys for ur input. One thing i did notice is the rubber seal that should be between the speed sensor and the sensor housing on the front wheel was missing....also the sensor had a dent in it

im gonna leave it alone

the brakes work so its good!

cheers
