So my dashboard lit up telling my my ABS/anti skid/tyre pressure monitor is inactive.

I seem to remember it's a common fault? Is it common-and-cheap or common-and-expensive?

I have the automotive DIY skills of an Emperor Penguin.

W212/E220. 92k miles.

Fault codes would tell, my sophisticated guess is rear speed sensor /reluctor ring fault

Curiously my fault code reader says "no fault codes found".

I am not surprised :) Fault in instrument cluster ---> code in memory. Your reader just can't. But if your reader can show live values, check rpm of each wheel.
