Absolute liberty!!!

There is a rattle on accelaration and when in drive on my 52 plate CLK 200 Komp, also the roof will not open and shut intermittently so I took it in this morning to a MB garage near where I live.
Got the call (which I was dreading) the total cost for repair is £3440, 2.4 for the roof and the rest to replace the Cat that was damaged, I was told I would not be able to drive it as the fillings from the cat would get into the engine, I told them I couldnt afford and would pick it up ASAP.
an hour later I got a call, we have rechecked, it is not the cat but the mounting, as the mounting and cat are one unit it must all be replaced!!
I took the car to my little PTA workshop who charged me £35 to weld the mounting back on £35 against £1000, luckily I am not that well off, if I was I would have probably told MB to go ahead, I am now waiting on an auto electrics guy to look at the roof!

Anyone else had anything like this happen?

Dreadful isn't it. I'm active as a moderator on the 206cc forum (my wife has one). We've had members quoted well over £1000 by dealers to repair their roof mechanism when a little specialist know-how can do it for nothing. Happens time and time again. Its usually a sensor loose, or not functioning, or (often) operator error causing the electronics to lose track of where they are in the sequence.
As for not offering to weld the bracket back on - unbelievable (or not! in this day and age).

The roof will not open, I undo the lever in the car, the windows all open but the roof lid does not pop up, I can hear the microswitches (I think) clicking,
I removed the battery for 10 mins but that did no good anyone got any ideas?
Plus I now need the radio code!
