Sorry to come back again!
Contacted local MB spares dept & they said they advise to renew compressor or pulley!
COSTS - Recon exchange compressor £347 + Vat (includes pulley) & new pulley only - costs £378 + vat
The noise from the clutch on the pulley is now continuous on idle but disappears as revs increase.
Question – How difficult is the job & can I short cut the job by repairing whatever is creating the noise? I presume I will need to regas if I have a recon compressor?
Thanks in advance!

hi james does the rattling stop when the air con is on and the pump is running? often the eletromagnet comes loose from its backing plate, it may also be a bearing gone. On some pumps, mostly the non Jap ones you can put new bearings and magnets in, you need specialist pullers to bet the pully off and bearings out, my father does quite a few aircon pump refurbs as he specialises in agricultural aircon, bad news is some pumps r recon only

AC compressor clutch

Simon
Thanks for reply -
Have tried it with ac on & off but little difference in noise level.
At tick over it is worse but then runs normal at higher revs.
Ac works ok - it seems as tho' a recon pump will be best - although more costly the old girl has done 135K so one less thing to go wrong in the future!
It will not be difficult to fit but regas will be an extra cost.
