No, if there is no leak, it should never need recharging

No, if there is no leak, it should never need recharging
expectation is 10% gas loss per year - most give up (to keep themselves safe) below 50% fill
most systems around the 7 year mark rot through the condenser and lose 25% a year, and often survive the next 5 years through constant top ups

I believe all the modern MB’s have have clutchless “variable displacement” compressors which stay running at a few % even when off. Even my old 209 CLK has one of these. You really notice an old system like on my W201 which loudly clicks to engage in comparison.

Presumably there is some kind of safety system to protect the compressor if there’s a refrigerant leak in the system which stops oil circulating.

My car was standing idle for months before I bought it, guess what no AC. So supplying dealer recharged the AC and it has been fine since.

I believe the compressor is the scroll type which can accommodate a slight amount of liquid refrigerant

Nonense. Mine needs a regas ca every 7 years on all my cars
In that case, will have it regassed and hope it's not leaking any where.

We have owned 6 MB's over the last 20 years, all except one of our current ones were well over 7 years old when sold.
None had the A/C regassed.

If it stopped working after the car went through water then checking fuses, connections etc & scanning for codes is surely is the best move!
