AC problem 2000 V220 CDi

The AC on my car does not appear to work properly.

I try to listen for the compressor, but can not hear it. Where is this located? Is it a fuse somewhere? I can not find it listed in the owners manual.

The compressor is at the bottom of the engine at the rear,if the compressor isnt cutting in it may need recharging with new gas.

On most later cars the compressor runs all the time. Suggest recharge needed £45 kwick-fit.
