With the engine running and bonnet open you should be able to see the clutch on the AC compressor switch on and off when the button is pressed.
If the clutch doesn’t cut in when the switch is pressed its most common that you’re out of gas. Get it pressure leak tested as you may have a leak. Repair the leak then regas.

“Rest” feature is still available. I have it in the SLKA nice feature on that generation, turn off engine touch A/C button & the heater remains on for an hour. Great in winter, make sure the heater fan is on low speed.
