Activated charcoal in 203?

I ordered a "charcoal filter" and an "air filter" from my local dealer for my 203 C-class but instead received a combination filter A203 830 10 18 and a cylindrical item labelled "activated charcoal", A203 470 00 59.

Before I return the activated charcoal to the dealer, can any of you knowledgeable people out there tell me where the activated charcoal is fitted, whether its a big job to do, and whether it ever needs replacing. My car is 7 years / 140K miles young so perhaps its due some new charcoal anyway?
