Hi

New to the forum and MB cars too.

To add a melody to the squeaky brakes at low speed, my C300 now hums to itself, even with the key removed. Sort of whirring/humming sound from behind the cd slot area. The dealer can't hear it of course, even though I, my wife and business partner can!

Shouldn't everything be switched off with the key out? Any ideas as to what this could be?

I rented a 2007 C last month. Its brakes squeaked too. Do all MB brakes make a noise at low speed?i If so why?

Lastly I see some members post " myXXX 55 (or 56)" What do the Nos refer to

Thanks for your time. Great forum, best of the MB I've discovered.

Canadian eh! Hi & Welcome

It can take an age for the car to "Switch off" and when your outside it can sound very strange, there are many many systems and the car decides when fans and the like need to be switched off. You do get used to it though and notice when it doesn't do it.

As for the brakes I cannot say I've ever heard mine, did you drive it through Canada's other season? and how much salt did they use this year?

The 55 or 56 relate to Licence Plate No.s in the UK, these are age dependant and issued to the car not the owner. The current series started in September 2001 with 51, then March 2002 with 02, September 2002 with 52 and so on. We're currently on 08. Most members refer to their cars with a W for Saloon or S for Estate (Station Wagon) and the first 3 numbers of their Vin. Yours I'm guessing is a W204

Modern cars have wake up and going to sleep functions,, when you uinlock them they know that they are going to be driven and get ready, and when you stop they stay active for around 20 mins,, the noise that you can hear will be the fan in the Comand or the the overhead control panel or both,, as said, they turn off in 20 mins. When things go wrong, these things stay on and flatten the battery :D

Thanks Blobcat and Malcom

Now why couldn't the dealer tell me that!

My W204 does indeed reside in Toronto.

The brake noise is perhaps more of a groan then a squeak. Only at very low speed and it happens irregularly, both when I brake and lift off.

Not our winter though - the 2007 was rented last month at Gatwick and the first time I backed it into a parking spot - blow me, there's the same sound!

Thanks again
