Hello everyone,
I am hoping to tap into the expertise on the site for some advice, I am going to look at 1997 R regd SLk 230 auto in red with red/black leather interior the car has done 72K miles and has MBSH to 60K with indi SH up to the present mileage, the car looks to be in nice condition both inside and out , but what should I be looking out for in a 10 year old SLK ?, were they galvanised at this age,and what do I need to be careful of with the engine and auto box, were there any particular weaknesses with these cars?
Finally the sixty four thousand dollar question what is a car of this age worth these days, a ball park figure would help
thanks in anticipation Neil

Autotrader, Motors.co.uk and Compucar will all find vehicles via search parameters that you enter (including postcode area) - that will give you an indication of what is being asked for versus what the price guides say. Helps to ID some near ones for test drives too......

If you search the technical parts of this forum you will find some entries on SLKs, such as the MAF sensor, sticking roof sensors etc. Yours sounds similar to mine in age, milage etc and I have some minor rust on the rear wheel arches inner faces but that's it really. Dunno if the body is galvo though. Make sure the BAS light goes out after starting.......

Look out for engine wiring loom "tracking" oil inside it. This is caused by an oil leak from the cam side which allows oil to seep up inside the wiring which then shorts out various electronics, this happened with my older one and cost over £1k. to fix. Check that the rear wheel arches are free from rust and under the rear boot handle also. Price varies, but expect to pay between £7500 to £8900 depending on condition etc. Still the prettiest sports car around:cool:

Check the roof operation again, again, again and again, apart from that take advise mentioed above.

My wife has a 1998 SLK in red and it's been 99% reliable so if you take the plunge enjoy the car:razz:

BTW welcome to the forum
