Thinking strongly about buying a 1994 s320 with 160K miles

really appreciate any advice as i am not buying from a merc dealer.

Well, if it has FMBSH then you can confirm this with the stealership that has serviced it (ta-da! no more leafing through boring service books!).  Always get an independent inspection done by someone like the AA, this costs about £100 for the basic check (all the really important bits) and about £250 if you want them to count the dents and check the headlights and radio works (you can do most of that yourself - the websites list the things they do).  Get an HPI check carried out (costs about £15 but it can be cheaper with an inspection package).

IMHO if you're going to get a car with mileage like that on it you want to make sure it's been well looked after.

EDIT: just realised that it sounds expensive for those checks but imagine how much it would cost if something major went wrong on the flagship benz... :(
