Hi all, fancy a change from my 300SL and looking at a 2002 CL55K AMG (5.4 V8 Kompressor). Has anyone owned one of these, are they reliable ? Can anyone advise what to look out for. What are servicing costs like ? Many thanks, Darran.

Do it :)

There are some body work issues and the AMG's appear to tun at twice the price for consumables as the normal models. Still it's a great engine in a great car, very easy to hide in as no one notices the CL.

Thanks Blobcat, I've been told the V8 Kompressor is the better engine. Are these engines strong like no head gasket problems etc? I'm trying to confince the wife but struggling at the mo. Insurance prices are good, I'm surprised - been quoted £513 fully comp with protected ncd. Its just the servicing costs and if anything should go wrong - AMG !!

Thanks everyone for your replies. A little worried about the faults you've mentioned colechelle. Is there a way you can track the history of a vehicle and not just by the mot or servicing book? I've read up on reviews from WhatCar and they do say these are the better models to go for (CL500 & CL55 AMG) so feel quite confident there.

I've got one and have no complaints. Be careful when looking to find a good one as some do suffer from bodywork corrosion. Full Service History is a must.

Cheers Lewis, the one I'm looking at is a 2003 model but its up north and as I'm based in Kent its not easy to pop over and view the car. I take note of your advise thank you and will ask loads of questions

To be honest a CLK55AMG is a very different beast to a CL55AMG

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
April 2003 on should not have rust problem as I believe that they were galvanized from this date, some go wrong and some do not.

Do check the bottom of all 4 struts for any oil dampness or leaks they are expensive

The engines a tough and no gasket problems, they are great cars

Ooopps, my mistake, i read the CL55K as a CLK55 so cant say how good the CL is apart from when i was looking i was advised that the workshops saw more CL's than they did for CLK's mainly due to the fancy technology, may not be true though.
