ADVICE ON FUEL CONSUMPTION

mike ,
you are buying a 6 cylinder 2.6 litre engine car-i think it is 16 valve as well( as opposed to standard 8 valve)-so a powerful engine!! .

the official figures from the owners manual for an auto are-12.4 l/100km--urban driving

8.2 l/100km--at 90kph=55mph

10.2l/100km--at 120kph=75mph,

you will have to work out the m.p.g. from these figures.
4.55 litres=1 gallon
1.6km=1mile.

hope this helps-i personally would love the power of a 6 cylinder,have a 4 cylinder 190e -1.8 auto-it is the wife's car.

i know you were disillusioned by your previous post=but sometimes the answers are not out here.

steve,

your figures for the 190e-2.6 and 2.6-16V state that they are both 4 cylinder when in fact they are 6 cylinder -maybe a misprint in parkers perhaps?

Sunil,

Could be,  I just did a copy and paste from the relevant page ;)

Are they six pots? 'cos 16 valves into 6 cylinders doesn't go evenly does it?

Oh well maybe someone else can shed light on the mystery. But the figures  as quoted are from Parker's Guide.

ADVICE ON FUEL CONSUMPTION

steve,

i looked up the data from my merc owner's manual.
ther is a 2.5 diesel and turbo diesel-both 5 cylinder and 2497 cc.

and there is only i version of 2.6 litre=2597cc-mentioned-6cylinder

agree the 16v version has to be 4 pot=therfore must be special edn.

ADVICE ON FUEL CONSUMPTION

The 2.5-16 is a four cylinder twin camshaft 16 valve model, seem to remember the 2.6 is a six cylinder single camshaft 8 valve model.

Can only speak of the fuel consumption for the 2.5-16 (manual) of which gives me 30ish mpg on my steady daily drive and will drop a low as 22-24 if a heavy right foot comes into play.  Only on long clear motorway trips below 70mph have I seen 31-32 mpg.

The 2.5-16 motor is quite docile for what it is and only in the mid to higher rpm range does its true form become apparent.

With the 2.6 being a six cylinder I suspect it's more docile and less dependent on rev's, a more relaxed drive possibly???

The 2.6 attached to the autobox will be a nice combination actually, especially with the 2nd gear pullaway...that extra torque will make a lot of difference.

Sorry to throw something else in here, but didnt they make a 2.3 190 as well?

previous to the 190E 2.5-16 was the 2.3-16.  both were externally similar with subtle changes on the inside.

if my reading is correct......

for the 2.3-16 Merc had a venture with Cosworth, giving it a twin cam sixteen valve head plus other engine tweeks.  The later 2.5-16 being a in-house developement of the 2.3-16.  the single cam eight valve 2.3 unit was base engine used in this venture.

on the road performance between the two -16 models is very close with the 2.3 being a buzzier motor.  the only real performance difference is between lhd and rhd models, the rhd being down on power due to the re-routing of the exhaust manifold around the steering column.

There is plenty of sites on the web with a decent amount of info about these models and their evolutions.

I think they did a 2.3l 8v 190 in the US, as well as a 400E 4l V8 in a w124, they liked their bigger engines over there apparantly, base model 124 was the 2.6l straight 6

There are a couple of reasons that they always seem to have bigger engines. A) Because of all the emmissions equipment strapped to a US engine, the power output is greatly reduced, for example a US 2.3 Litre W201 only has 1 or 2 BHP more than a UK 2.0 litre W201..all because of the strangling!! B) Petrol is about 1/16th of what we pay for it, so the classic american "What the h*ll
, ill have a 5.5 litre V8" is on everybodies lips!
