Now that neither my wife nor I have anything remotely resembling a sensible car to throw the dog in or take the usual mountains of crap to the local tip I am minded to go spend arou d £1500 on an old estate that I can use for short hops ... Not too concerned about condition but prefer it to at least have a decent MOT left and be in good nick mechanically speaking...

Saw this : http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201306237447117

At £875 it just seems too cheap ..

Interested in what I should look for in a car of this age if I go to see it tomorrow?

Thats not cheap, its about right. Aslong as it has a decent current MOT you cant go far wrong

It's a 14 year old entry level Merc. Why does it sound cheap to you? I wouldn't pay that for it myself.

Its the right engine to have if you want a cheap-to-run estate, bit more power than the entry level c180, but just as good on fuel, better than the thirsty V6's, im sure you'd get him down to about £700 or so

That potentially looks like a nice old car for the money to me

Aside from the black velour interior Which is blue ( or he has a **** camera) Do those look like 10 hole alloys? Also the lack of a phone landline is a concern here along with the fact it looks like he deals out of the caravan at the back of one of the pictures.... Am I being too suspicious? Part service history when it has only had 1 owner and 80k miles ...... Prob needs decent drive to see if its ok...

Used to have a C63...
I know I shouldn't mention others on here... But if you a practical, reliable work-horse type of car, I'd be tempted by an old Scooby Impreza wagon.

Also gives you a winter warrior, and they're bullet-proof.

The wheels are standard for that car and fine, not any hole wheels.

You can check the MOT's on the web site, it still looks clean.

.... too many cars!
Thats a lot of car for the money and Im sure you could knock a bit off the price. I can never understand how the C class can go for so little money. I've seen saloons with 40k on the clock go for £2k. Crazy!

The milage may or may not be real, doesnt really matter, if it had done 150k it would still be fine. There really is very little that goes wrong with these, take it for a spin around the block, chip him down a little and you'll have a good, cheap car. More money does not necessarily equal better car!

Course it's 'part service history' ..... the car is 13/14 years old. My 1999 Vauxhall's 'service history' stopped as soon as I bought the car over 10 years ago according to the service book, but it's lacked for nothing in all that time. I'd like to think that the way it looks, drives & its 180k miles is testament to that.

Mine an entry level was from 97 and did over 280000 kilometers the rear silencer box was original, the only call them major repairs in all that time were 1 MAF, 1 Rear Window wiper motor, One front window wiper motor and one steering arm the one that goes from right to left. The rest were just consumables. I never had to top up with oil, I did the Auto box once about 10000 before she was scraped, even then I could have repaired her with 2 wings (in colour) for 45 each and 2 right hand doors in colour for 75 each. I still got over 38 to the gallon on a run, auto on cruise. She was the most reliable car I have ever had. And it was damned upsetting when we finally laid her to rest. And now I wish I hadn't. So for that money you cant go wrong especially if you think that I got 350 from the insurance and 200 from Dronsfields they even collected her.

I bought a C250D around 2 or 3 years ago for £800. 127K on the clock I drove it to Malaga and back and it never missed a beat. Later, I sold it for...............£800 :D
It was that car that eventually got me into my lovely SL. If it drives OK and you can negotiate to £700, it's a no brainer!
