Hi everyone,

I am a new member. I am hoping to buy either a new or relatively new (1-2 years old) merc. I am a bit confused whether I should buy an E class saloon or a C class estate.

I was thinking of C220 CDI or a E220 CDI.

1. Should i buy a new one or a used one and save some money?
2. How much would a 2005-2007 C220 and E220 cost?
3. What should i look for when i buy an used one?
4. Should i buy from MB dealer?
5. I can stretch upto 25-27 K.
6. How much should i bargain with the dealer?

Thanks in advance.:p

If you order an E220cdi quickly you get a free upgrade to the E280cdi but you must register before end December. OR you can order a Classic and get free upgrade to Elegance and so on. Check offers on MB website.

I assume you will want auto as over 90% of C's and E's are auto. You will be hard put to buy a new E220cdi auto with normal extras for the 25-27k budget you mention. But you will get a very, very good one nearly new for that money. Buy post facelift as massive changes and improvements were made.

The new C class will be hard to find secondhand as it has only recently come out. As it is a new model depreciation will stay low for some while yet so buying new is not as expensive as it sometimes can be.

I would only buy full MBSH myself and I have always found the best examples tend to be with Merc dealers. Haggle. They usually come down a fair wack from asking prices. Nearly new, which you say you want, are really only at Merc dealers and MB Direct.

Secondhand prices: a good guide to asking prices is to look at MB Direct and also use the search engine on the MB website.

How hard to haggle: - well on a new E class, in addition to a free upgrade on engine or trim, I would expect you to get at least £2k off the list price from a Merc dealer.
C class is a new model. Check What Car for their 'target price'.

With that budget, you can have a fairly average new merc or a very nice used one. Personally I'd get a used (late 06) E320cdi with a few toys and an extended warranty (so its the same as a new one). Pretty much the only car you ever need - smooth, roomy, fast and economical.
