Hi friends,

Ok this is my problem.
I not so long ago I acquired my first ever Merc and apart from my niggle, it's probably one of my best ever purchases.
It's a 1988 190E auto with full MB service history and only 27,000 on the clock...
However, it's got a slight starting problem.
On cold starts (over nights or over a few hours) it takes quite a few turns before the engine fires up and when it does, initially the idlying is weak.
Oh in addition the abs light would come on completely at random. Not always, only sometimes once the engine had fully kicked in. But if you turned off the ignition then start agian then it most likely wouldn't come on again. (weird)

Ok, so i've decided to get it looked at. Booked it into a nearby local 'so called' independent specialist ( who I won't name just yet!!!) and I was told that a relay was faulty and that one of the injectors was leaking.
My problems would be solved if these items were replaced.
After departing with £330 and bringing my pride and joy home, the next day it was as if the car hadn't even been touched...  Both problems were still there.

Ok so I taken it back, and left it with the garage for a few days at a time and guess what?? everytime the symptoms are still there.

Most recently, I was told that an air intake valve had to be replaced.

In total I've spent about £450 and taken my baby to this 'specialist' about  8 times, and the starting problem and the confused abs light are still present.

Before I go insane can someone please help and suggest what I should do next.

I'm reluctant to take it back to the same garage; either this is some major mind teasing problem that even 'independent specialists' can't deal with or they just haven't got a clue what they're doing.

option 2 is to take to another gagrage and start again.

I feel very let down and cheated for having paid for something you can't see the benefit of.

And most importantly not being able to fully appreciate and enjoy my pride possession.

Sorry for the length, but any suggests and advice pls..
i have no hair left....

Seems like there might be an electrical fault somewhere. What does the owners manual recommend?I had a problem with my abs lights and changed the sensors on the wheels and that seemed to work.

Hi,

The American forums constantly refer to the OVP relay causing such problems.  It is an Over Voltage Protection relay, which has a fuse on the top.  Apparently if this fails on W124 with M103 motors, then you get the ABS light coming on and rough idling/starting.

Now, I haven't managed to find that relay on my car, it may be for USA only, but it might be on your car?  Anyone familiar with 190E? Does it have such a relay?

Being a person who hates swapping components for the sake of it, I would have a search for OVP on the American forums and see if the symptoms match yours.

ABS light might also be exactly as jasonS described, and the only cure might be to find out which sensor is faulty and replace it.

Which engine do you have?  If it is the 2.6 then you might just have to live with the poor starting. Nature of the beast I'm afraid.  I can report that injector cleaner does help with my cars starting, but only when it is in the tank, next fillup it is back to usual behaviour.

Regards,

Richard
